Good Grief is designed for youth ages 8-15 that have experienced the loss of a loved one and is provided at no cost to the youth or their families. Winner of the 2013 Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Innovative Program Award, this program seeks to integrate therapeutic activities with the fun and challenges of the camping experience. Youth will learn that grief is normal as are their feelings; they are not alone in their grief experience; it is okay to have fun while grieving and they are forever connected to their loved one. Youth have the opportunity to share their loss and memories with other youth, camp staff, volunteers and therapeutic staff. They will learn that their feelings are normal and that there are ways to celebrate loved ones in our everyday lives. All camp staff and volunteers undergo background checks and receive special training to help them support those attending. The Grief Camp Program is overseen by Jane Peachey a licensed independent social worker with over 19 years of experience working with grief, death and dying. She has directed grief camps for children for the last 10 years, seven years for Hospice of the Valley and the last 3 for Good Grief at Camp Frederick. Most recently Jane works out of Good Hope Lutheran Church in North Lima running support groups and providing grief counseling for the surrounding communities. She is a consultant for Compassionate Friends, the Rogers Ohio Chapter.
The activities planned are fun, educational and therapeutic.
Team building activities build social skills and stress the importance of helping one another with the challenges in life. Games and activities teach coping skills that help youth deal with life’s daily stressors not just limited to grief. Arts and crafts are designed to help youth express emotions when words are not enough. Yoga and relaxation activities help youth learn ways of handling stress. Campers 8 and up will scale the Climbing Tower and Shoot Archery Campers 11-12 will challenge themselves on the High Ropes Course and Canoeing. Campers 13-15 will go White Water Rafting in addition to the other activities. This is just a taste of what the campers will experience!
